ABOUT US

Jean-Claude Mas was born in Pézenas, in the heart of the Languedoc vineyards. At the age of 3, during the grape harvest, he slipped away from his mother’s watchful eye and ran 2.5 km to join his grandfather Raymond, who was working on the new wines in the cellar: his passion for wine was born! But for a long time, it would remain just a hobby.

An international first career
At school and university, he chose to study economics and advertising before embarking on an international career. Yet no matter where he lived whether in northern France (where he launched a wine club), in England (where he started an organic wine import company), or in Miami (working as assistant to the commercial attaché for wine, food products, and fashion) his first passion never left him. One of his roles at Motul in 1990 brought him closer to another of his passions: car and motorcycle rallying. “My roots were deeper than they seemed. They brought me back to wine.”

In 1992, he joined the William Pitters group, founded by Bernard Magrez in Bordeaux. This entry into the wine world proved decisive, as did his encounter with one of Italy’s leading oenologists, Giorgio Grai, who taught him the art of blending and creating wine with style. That learning experience has never stopped.

In the mid-1990s, a return to his winemaking roots began to take shape. He created his first blends bottled at the family estate: the first wine bottle signed Mas bears the 1995 vintage. Five years later, in 2000, he founded Domaines Paul Mas, starting from the family estate’s 35 hectares.
