History - Purchased by the Gabb family in 2009, Mount Rozier was founded at the turn of the 19th century by Annie Rozier, a flower merchant. She picked wildflowers in the Schapenberg hills surrounding her family's homestead and famously, she also produced natural remedies and medicines for the local community.
In the 1920s, the Stellenbosch-based estate formed part of Myrtle Grove, where the first ever commercial plantings of Pinotage were grown in 1941 by Professor Perold.
Producer - Mount Rozier
Regional Information - The grapes are grown in South Africa's Western Cape on sunny, north-facing slopes. The soil is deep and sandy with river rocks, which helps with drainage and encourages healthy vine growth. The vines are watered using drip irrigation — a precise and sustainable method — and trained on a 7 Strand Perold trellis system to support the grapes and improve quality. All farming is done sustainably, with care for the environment.
Vinification Details - After picking, the grapes are quickly sorted and destemmed, then pressed to preserve fresh fruit flavours. The naturally flowing juice (free-run) is kept separate from the pressed juice. Each is handled to bring out its best. Pressed juice is cooled and fermented in small stainless-steel tanks using a special yeast that enhances fruitiness. After fermentation, the wines are blended, stabilized, and bottled — ready to enjoy!
