ABOUT US
The Heritage of a Historic Bordeaux Maison (Since 1892)
Founded in 1892, Maison Mähler-Besse has spent over 130 years cultivating a reputation for excellence, independence, and tradition. The story began when 20-year-old Frédérik Mähler left the Netherlands for France to establish a company specializing in fine wines and spirits. Based in the historic Chartrons district of Bordeaux, he married Marguerite Besse in 1905 and quickly expanded the business internationally, exporting French wines to Northern Europe, Russia, Canada, and the Antilles. True to its roots, the Maison has never left its historical headquarters on Rue Camille Godard since its inception.
The Twin Identity: Master Merchants and Passionate Winemakers
Driven by a deep passion for the vineyards, the family quickly transitioned from prestigious wine merchants into esteemed wine producers. In 1938, Mähler-Besse reached a historic milestone by becoming co-owners of the legendary Château Palmer (Third Classified Growth in Margaux) and acquiring Château Cheval Noir in Saint-Émilion. Over the generations, the Maison expanded its property footprint across Bordeaux’s finest appellations, acquiring prestigious estates such as Château La Couronne (Saint-Émilion Grand Cru) and Château Picard (Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois). Today, this dual role as both a historic négociant and an estate owner ensures absolute viticultural know-how and an uncompromising standard of quality.

A Sustainable Future Rooted in Family Spirit
Today, under the leadership of Philippe Castéjà, Maison Mähler-Besse continues to evolve with a long-term vision while preserving its deep-rooted community spirit. Embracing modern trends and global growth, the Maison perfectly bridges the gap between traditional French winemaking and the expectations of modern wine enthusiasts. Driven by high standards and a taste for sharing, the company is also deeply committed to sustainability, proudly holding the Cultivons Demain Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) certification, proving that great wines are best shared when they honor the people, the terroirs, and the environment.
The Bordeaux region is defined by the dividing line of the Gironde estuary and its tributaries, creating the renowned Left Bank and Right Bank. On the Left Bank, areas such as the Médoc, Haut-Médoc and Pauillac are typically characterised by gravel-rich soils that favour Cabernet Sauvignon. The resulting wines are structured and powerful, with firm tannins, dark fruit intensity and excellent ageing potential - hallmarks of classic Left Bank claret. In particular, Pauillac is often seen as one of the most prestigious appellations, known for deep, concentrated wines with graphite, cassis and cedar notes.
Mähler-Besse’s estate portfolio and partnerships are designed to capture this full spectrum of Bordeaux expression. The family acquired Château Cheval Noir in Saint-Émilion as their first estate, establishing a strong Right Bank foundation, and later expanded into the northern Médoc with Château Picard in Saint-Estèphe in 1932, bringing structure and Left Bank power into the range. Further investments, including Château Alfa La Bernarde near Fronsac and Château La Couronne in Saint-Émilion, reinforced their commitment to the Right Bank’s elegance and richness. Alongside this, the family’s co-ownership of the iconic Château Palmer in Margaux further connects the range to one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated historic estates.

UNDERSTANDING BORDEAUX
Left Bank vs Right Bank
The wines of Bordeaux are shaped by the Gironde estuary, which divides the region into the Left Bank and Right Bank - each with its own distinctive style and personality.
Left Bank (Haut-Médoc & Pauillac)
The Left Bank includes appellations such as Haut-Médoc and Pauillac, where gravel-rich soils favour Cabernet Sauvignon. Wines from here are typically more structured and powerful, with firm tannins, dark fruit intensity and excellent ageing potential. Pauillac, in particular, is known for its concentration, depth and classic notes of cassis, cedar and graphite.
Right Bank (Saint-Émilion & Saint-Émilion Grand Cru)
The Right Bank, centred around Saint-Émilion, is generally Merlot-led, producing wines that are softer, rounder and more immediately approachable. Expect ripe plum, black cherry and velvety textures. Within this area, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru represents a higher classification, with stricter production standards and greater concentration, offering more complexity, structure and ageing potential while still retaining the plush, generous style of the region.

Simple Guide to Choosing
Bordeaux Blanc
A fresh, crisp white Bordeaux with citrus and floral notes. Light, refreshing and ideal with seafood, salads or as an aperitif.
Bordeaux Rouge
A smooth, fruit-forward red Bordeaux designed for easy enjoyment. Soft tannins and red berry flavours make it perfect for everyday meals and casual dining.
Haut-Médoc (Left Bank)
A classic structured red with dark fruit, subtle spice and firm tannins. Ideal for roast meats, grilled dishes and more robust flavours.
Saint-Émilion (Right Bank)
A smooth, generous Merlot-led wine with ripe plum and black cherry flavours. Rounded, approachable and very food-friendly.
Pauillac (Left Bank)
A powerful, prestigious Bordeaux with deep cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Complex and age-worthy, suited to special occasions and rich dishes.
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Right Bank)
A more refined, concentrated expression of Saint-Émilion with greater depth and structure. Elegant, layered and suitable for ageing or premium dining occasions.
